  • Repairing Hail-Punctured Commercial Roofs Across Greater Houston
  • Severe hailstorms move through Harris County most springs, and the stones that fall here are rarely small. We have walked roofs in Spring, Katy, and along the Energy Corridor after a single storm pocked an entire field of membrane with impact craters. On a flat or low-slope commercial roof, hail does damage that is easy to miss from the ground and expensive to ignore: bruised membrane that fractures weeks later, split seams, crushed insulation, and clean punctures that let water reach the deck. We handle every stage of that repair, from the emergency patch the morning after to the permanent restoration once the scope is settled.
  • Houston's commercial stock is overwhelmingly keyed to large single-ply and modified bitumen roofs, and each system fails under hail in its own way. We diagnose the specific failure mode before we touch a roll of membrane, because patching a TPO puncture is a different job than re-felting a hail-shattered cap sheet on a downtown warehouse.
  • What Hail Actually Does to a Flat Roof
  • The damage from a hail event is layered, and the part you can see is usually the least of it. A stone hitting a membrane transfers a shock that travels through the field, the insulation, and sometimes the fasteners holding everything down.
  • Punctures and Tears
  • The most direct damage is a clean hole. Larger stones, especially the two-inch and bigger hail that has hit areas like Cypress and the northwest suburbs, punch straight through single-ply membrane and the felt layers of a built-up roof. Once the top layer is breached, water tracks laterally under the membrane and shows up as a leak far from the actual hole. We probe the surrounding field because one visible puncture almost always means several more nearby.
  • Membrane Bruising and Latent Fractures
  • This is the damage that gets missed. A stone can strike hard enough to fracture the reinforcing scrim inside a TPO or PVC sheet without breaking the top surface. The roof looks intact, passes a quick glance, and then splits open under the next hard rain or the first cold snap. On modified bitumen, the same impact crushes the granule surface and cracks the asphalt below, accelerating UV breakdown in a climate that already punishes roofs with relentless sun. We map these bruises with close-up inspection and, where there's any question, core sampling.

Crushed Insulation and Trapped Moisture

Hail compresses the insulation board under the membrane, creating low spots that collect water. Given how flat Houston roofs are and how much rain the Gulf throws at them, those new depressions turn into ponding zones that hold standing water for days. Wet, compressed insulation loses its R-value and rots the facer, so we check for saturation rather than assuming the problem stopped at the surface. Our Hail Repair Process

We work the problem in a fixed order so nothing gets skipped and the repair holds.

Emergency stabilization. If the roof is actively leaking after a storm, we get out quickly to dry in the open punctures with compatible patching and temporary sealant. Stopping interior damage in a building full of inventory or equipment is the first priority.

Full impact survey. We grid the roof and mark every strike, distinguishing fresh hail bruising from older wear. This documentation matters for both the repair plan and any insurance claim.

Moisture verification. We confirm whether water has reached the insulation or deck, because a surface patch over a saturated assembly just traps the problem.

Permanent repair. We cut out compromised membrane and wet insulation, replace it with matching material, and heat-weld or torch the patches into the existing field using the right method for the system.

Seam and detail check. Hail loosens flashings, pitch pans, and seam laps, so we re-secure penetrations and curbs while we're up there.

Matching the Repair to Your Roof System

The repair method follows the membrane. We don't force one approach onto every building.

TPO and PVC Single-ply roofs dominate newer commercial construction around Westchase and the Galleria. We hot-air weld replacement membrane into the field, which gives a monolithic bond rather than a glued seam that can peel. Where bruising is widespread but the deck is sound, a reinforced patch program restores the roof without a full tear-off.

Modified Bitumen and Built-Up

Many older industrial and retail buildings carry multi-ply asphalt systems. Hail that cracks the cap sheet gets cut out, primed, and rebuilt with matching plies and a fresh granulated surface. We pay attention to surface reflectivity because dark, hail-stripped asphalt heats fast under Houston sun and ages quickly. Talk with a Houston commercial roofing team
